Different Road Patterns

As per the recommendation of Jayakar Committee the long term road plan was developed and while preparing a road development different road patterns was adopted.

Different Road Patterns :

  1. Rectangular or Block Pattern
  2. Radial or Star and Block Pattern
  3. Radial or Star and Circular Pattern
  4. Radial or Star and Grid Pattern
  5. Hexagonal Pattern

1. Rectangular or Block Pattern :

In this road pattern the whole area is divided into rectangular or block of plots, with streets intersecting at right angle. The main road which passes through the center of the are should be sufficiently wide and other branch road may be comparatively narrow. The main road is provided a direct approach to outside the city.

Rectangular or Block road pattern is adopted in Chandigarh city (India)

Radial or Star and Block Pattern :

In this type of road pattern the entire area is divided into a road network radiating outward from the Central Business Area. In between radiating road the build up area may be planned with rectangular block.

Radial or Star and Circular Pattern :

In this type of road pattern road network is radiating outward from Central Business Area and Radial roads area interconnected by developing ring roads and the enclosed area between ring road and radial road is Built-up Area.

Radial or Star and Grid Pattern :

In this type of road pattern Radial roads are connected at Focal Point which is center of the plan and the area between the radial roads  from the Grid structure.

Hexagonal Pattern :

In this road pattern the roads formation is like hexagonal Shape, the enclosed by hexagon is may be a Build-up Area.
